Hands-on: the major differences between the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max

While there were many rumors that the Apple would say goodbye to the Pro Max name and switch to Ultra, none of that turned out to be true. The company came out with the iPhone 15 Pro Max and these are our initial findings.

The iPhone 15 Pro Max is Apple’s most expensive device. But why go for the 15 Pro Max instead of the regular Pro? By the way, you can read the first impression of its little brother here, which includes other features found in the 15 Pro Max such as the action button.

Larger screen of the iPhone 15 Pro Max

The thing that stands out most about the iPhone 15 Pro Max is, of course, the screen. At 6.7 inches, it is larger than the 6.1 inches of the regular Pro. This makes you enjoy your favorite series and game even more.

With 3000 nits, you can see everything on the screen even in full sunlight. That’s pretty nice, since the phone size means you can’t always use your hand to cover it.

Better battery

With the iPhone 15 Pro Max, of course we have to talk about the battery. I lasted almost a day and a half with the phone, but I must say that I left the always-on screen off, for example. Of course, the size of the device is ideal for adding extra battery.

Incidentally, that size and a bit more battery does make the device a bit heavier. Still, it doesn’t feel very heavy because of the titanium body.

The camera of the iPhone 15 Pro Max

Excluding the size of the device, the biggest difference between the Pro and Pro Max is mainly in the camera. And that difference is mainly found in the telephoto camera. The Pro has a larger sensor, making snapshots even better.

There is also another difference: the telephoto camera has a so-called tetraprism design. Where photographers have to constantly change lenses to have a different focal point, tetraprism allows you to have seven lenses in one.

The highlight is the camera’s 5X zoom. Normally I never actually use the zoom function of my smartphone. You get blurry images, so it’s not really worth it. That’s a different story with the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

The 15 Pro Max is a fine device for shooting from a distance. However, you do have to be careful in lower light conditions, because then the function does suffer a bit. With clear weather, the results are really excellent.

Fine gaming

Where the iPhone 15 Pro might be a bit prickly for gaming, the 15 Pro Max certainly isn’t. The size of the device makes it easy to play a fine game on it.

The nice thing is that Apple is bringing more and more games to the iPhone. I myself played a demo of Resident Evil Village and it already looked good on the iPhone 15 Pro, but the big screen is really a relief. You also easily pair your Xbox or PlayStation controller, making it even easier to play. Just don’t expect the top-notch graphics like on a gaming PC, but it’s very playable nonetheless.

Price

I still have to talk about the price. Because this is Apple’s premium model, you also pay more for the iPhone 15 Pro Max than the regular 15 Pro.

The 15 Pro has a starting price of 1,229 euros. For the 15 Pro Max, it is 1,479 euros. So, roughly speaking, you pay 250 euros more for the better model, if you choose the same amount of storage. It’s up to you whether these better features are worth that amount to you.
