The iPhone 15 will be launched this Friday. WANT editor Jeroen Kraak got a chance to use both the 15 and 15 Plus for a day, and here are his first impressions.
While Apple seems to be making safe choices in terms of colors with the iPhone 15 Pro, it’s a completely different story with the regular and Plus versions. Apple opts for unusually light colors, except for the black model.

I received a pink and a blue one from Apple. Although the blue one looks almost white in sunny weather, that changes at dusk. Then you really have a baby blue device in your hands.
What is immediately noticeable is that this time the back is matte instead of smooth. This gives the regular iPhone 15 a luxurious look. It’s nice that this also keeps you from seeing fingerprints easily, something that was common with the smooth design of the 14. Moreover, this makes the device feel more comfortable in the hand.
There is also a new USB-C port on the iPhone 15, allowing you to use the same charger as for many other devices. Handy if you want to borrow a charger somewhere if you forgot your own.
Compared to the regular 14, the iPhone 15 is quite an upgrade. In fact, you could call it a further developed version of the iPhone 14 Pro. Although it does not have three cameras on the back, it does have Dynamic Island.
Because Apple rather limited third-party development of Dynamic Island last year, not many apps are using it yet. However, this is expected to increase significantly this year.
New camera in iPhone 15
The camera has also received a major upgrade. When taking photos with the iPhone 15, you’ll notice that it has a higher resolution. Especially when zooming in, it produces sharper photos than the 14. The phone also performs much better in low light. Even portraits in the dark look good.
Taking videos has also become even easier. You can now zoom in even easier during both filming and video mode. Action mode now makes it even easier to take videos when someone is moving.
The screen of the iPhone 15
The iPhone 15 features an updated Super Retina XDR screen. This is particularly noticeable when you’re outside. While I rarely had problems seeing the screen clearly in the sun, it is now even clearer thanks to the 2000 nits.
This is also noticeable when watching videos. Peak brightness is 1600 nits, a feature carried over from the iPhone 14 Pro. This makes watching movies and series via Netflix or Apple TV+ a real pleasure.
Under the Hood
Under the hood is Apple’s A16 Bionic chip. This chip, like the Dynamic Island, was first introduced with the iPhone last year and is about 20 percent faster. You especially notice this when switching between different apps.
A completely new element is the new generation ultra-wideband chip in the device. The big advantage of this is that you can find your Apple Watch or AirPods Pro 2 even easier. For messy people like me, this is ideal. I was able to locate my earbuds in seconds.
Battery life is about the same as the iPhone 14. I was able to use my phone for an entire day just fine. The iPhone 15 Plus has an even larger battery, so you can get up to two days with economical use.
We will present a comprehensive review and video in a few weeks. After all, you can’t really judge a phone until you’ve had it for several weeks.
