Scary Fast in a nutshell: Apple’s new chip, MacBooks and iMac

At just over 30 minutes, the shortest Apple event in years was a reality last night. Scary Fast was good for a pile of new Mac products as well as a very remarkable action.

Scary Fast, that’s what we can call the event and the products announced at it. New M3 chips provide the new MacBook Pro models with a punchy upgrade, and the 24-inch iMac also gets its first overhaul since 2021. Time to take a closer look.

Apple’s new M3 chips are indeed Scary Fast

With the Scary Fast event, the era of both the 3-nanometer chip and the third-generation Apple Silicon has arrived. Apple showed three different models during the presentation: M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max.

Apple equips the regular M3 chip with an 8-core CPU, 10-core GPU and up to 24GB of central memory.

The Pro model features a 12-core CPU, 18-core GPU and up to 36GB of central memory.

The king of the whole game is the M3 Max. This guy features a 16-core CPU, 40-core GPU and up to 128GB of central memory.

The 14-inch MacBook Pro takes on the M3 chip

Those new M3 chips from Apple obviously have to go in somewhere, so Apple is also coming out with new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models right away.

Faster than its predecessors, improved graphics performance and a 1600 nits peak display are among the specifications. There is HDMI 2.1 support, Wi-Fi 6E can be found, AND the models have an average battery life of 22 hours.

During Scary Fast, Apple announced the following prices:

M3 | 14-inch | 2,029 euros
M3 Pro | 14-inch | 2,259 euros
M3 Pro | 16-inch | 3,049 euros
M3 Max | 14-inch | 2,549 euros
M3 Max | 16-inch | 4,299 euros

Apple will launch both MacBook Pro models with an M3 or an M3 Pro chip on Nov. 7. Those looking to get their hands on an M3 Max will have to wait until the end of November.

Apple finally drops the new 24-inch iMac

Scary Fast may have been a short event, but there was plenty to see. In addition to that M3 chip and the MacBook Pros, Apple also brought the iMac back to our attention.

The successor to the 2021 24-inch model will directly get the M3 chip (50% faster than the M1) with the Media Engine and Hardware Ray Tracing. The former was not yet in the M1 chip of the 2021 model and the latter feature is new.

Apple equips the model with up to 24GB of central memory, 8- and 10-core GPU, Bluetooth 5.3 and Wifi 6E. Other than that, the party basically remains the same, right down to the colors.

Starting Nov. 7, 2023, the new 24-inch iMac will be available for order starting at 1,849 euros. That’s about 40 euros more than the 2021 model cost you.

A most unusual choice

With all the above products, the Scary Fast event came to an end. Extraordinary, because we honestly expected Apple to have one more small announcement.

Despite the fact that the iPhone and your AirPods are all over, Apple is sticking with Lightning for a while longer. The Magic Mouse as well as the Magic Keyboard and Magic Trackpad are not yet transitioning to USB-C.
