During WWDC23 we saw iOS 17 for the first time, and at the beginning of autumn everyone will be able to use it on the iPhone. More and more features are also revealed. The newest feature makes passwords unnecessary.
Many new features are currently being tested in the new iOS 17 beta, which is now available to download and install on the iPhone. Included in it is “Passkeys,” a way Apple, Google and Microsoft want to improve the way people log in.
Passkeys is coming to iOS 17
Passkeys is the ideal way to log in to various personal accounts in the future. Instead of the traditional username and password, you can use a simple PIN or biometrics. Of course, it is much easier to use Face ID to log in instead of having to remember a separate password for each website.
In addition, it is also much more secure. You probably have quite a few accounts online. You probably use the same password for them a number of times, otherwise it’s impossible to remember them. With passkeys via iOS 17 on your iPhone, you can avoid this and log in more securely. It’s even more secure than a password manager and two-factor authentication, since it’s tied to your Apple ID.
So if you want to log in to the Apple ID or iCloud site, for example, you no longer have to use a password. On the login screen, you will now see that you have an alternative option to log in. This is only possible in the betas of iOS 17 and macOS Sonoma. So keep in mind that it is a beta and not everything may work perfectly.
This is the great advantage of no passwords on your iPhone
Of course, you can already log in via your biometrics if you’ve paired them with your passwords, but that doesn’t apply to every device. Consider, for example, logging into your iCloud on a device that doesn’t support Face ID or Touch ID. Passkeys makes that a lot easier.
Passkeys will become a regular feature of iOS 17, but the exact release date is unknown. They will be launched at the same time as the new iPhones, expected sometime in September or October.
