Pokémon GO, Niantic’s immensely popular AR game, is getting a successor. It’s just not what you’d expect it to be.
Where Niantic previously ran on the iconic Pokémon franchise, the developer is taking a completely different path this time around. Are there basketball fans in the audience?
Pokémon GO successor focuses on the NBA
Personally, I’m happy about it, because my heart beats considerably faster for the NBA. The American basketball league is usually a source of spectacle and will therefore also be the subject of Niantic’s new game. But how does this work exactly?
On the official website of NBA All World, as the game will be called, not much is clear yet. All we know is that you can compete against other players in the real world. Like Pokémon GO, I expect the goal is to throw the ball, sometimes with effect, to the basket. Based on your performance and miles traveled, you can then collect various things. Think for example of new sneakers and cool accessories.
We do not yet know when the game will be available. Niantic does announce that those who are interested can already register on the official website. So as soon as the Pokémon GO successor actually sees the light of day you will be able to get started right away. You can register via this link.
Harry Potter: Wizard Unite
Despite the fact that NBA All World is a follow-up to Pokémon GO, it is certainly not the first game made after its great success. For example, in 2017 the developer introduced the game Harry Potter: Wizards Unite. Given the success of the Pokémon game and the popularity of Harry Potter, it seemed like a great combination. Practice, however, proved otherwise. Early this year, the plug was officially pulled on the game.
It is hoped that NBA All World can somewhat match the success of Pokémon GO. Although that will be a tall task considering the basketball league, despite its popularity, is not as big as The Pokémon Company’s franchise.
