iOS 18 will be a game-changer for Apple and iPhone

iOS 18 is likely to be the biggest iPhone update in the company’s history. CEO Tim Cook made some striking statements during Apple’s presentation of its first quarterly earnings in 2024.

ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google Bard and other AI applications are causing a landslide in the smartphone landscape. Suddenly, everything revolves around AI. Samsung, Google and other brands all want to show with their latest models that they are ready for it.

Apple, on the other hand, is not releasing much about it. The operating system hasn’t really undergone any major changes in recent years. That’s about to change with iOS 18 and the iPhone 16, if Tim Cook is to be believed.

Apple and AI

During the quarterly earnings presentation, Tim Cook said he is incredibly excited about what Apple is going to show this year. Moreover, AI also came up during the talk. That means we can expect a lot from iOS 18.

Still, this does not mean that the current iPhone cannot support AI. There are already NPU cores in the chips that are getting more and more sophisticated and doing machine learning. For example, your iPhone can recognize people and objects in photos and correct texts. So that’s AI, but not as in the form of ChatGPT.

Still, there is definitely work to be done for Apple, especially with Siri. It was already lagging behind in previous years, and with the integration of Google Bard with Google Assistant, this will only get more so.

hefty expectations for iOS 18 and the iPhone

Cook told the meeting that Apple will spend an enormous amount of time and effort on AI, and that more details will be announced later this year. Presumably this will happen during WWDC 24, which takes place sometime in June. It is Apple’s developer conference, and there it traditionally presents the new versions of operating software for all Apple devices, such as the iPhone and Mac.

Tim Cook doesn’t want to reveal much more just yet. “Our practice is always to do the work first and then talk about it, but we’re tremendously excited about the things we’ll be able to share later this year.”

So we’ll have to wait and see what Apple has to offer in the battle against ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and Google Bard. However, expectations for iOS 18 and the iPhone 16 are sky-high.
